The roots of Esschem reach back to the mid-1850s, when German immigrant Henry David Justi invented new materials and procedures for the manufacture of porcelain teeth. Until that time, false teeth were handwork, which was highly variable and labor intensive.
After nearly a century in the dental business, starting in the late 1930s with the advent of acrylic resins, a transition to molded plastic teeth took place. The Justi Company introduced the pioneering line of Denta Pearl plastic teeth at the Cleveland convention of the ADA in 1940.
